TFI is thrilled to announce our pop-up Memory Lab at Pen and Brush from June 15 to July 15 in New York as our first TFI Teaches event.
The Memory Lab aligns with TFI Teaches’ primary goal to increase access to feminist materials and empower individuals to preserve their analog and digital legacies by offering our archival services to the public.
At the memory lab, participants can schedule archival consultations with TFI staff and digitize materials. Participants will receive copies of their files. We might even curate a selection of materials to publish in our digital archive and social channels depending on interest!
Additionally, we’ll host a series of 3 archival workshops and release the first series of TFI Teaches zines.
Archival Consultations
What are archival consultations?
At your archival consultation, you can discuss your personal archive with our archivists. This can range from planning the scope of your project to talking about digitization techniques, or just sharing the story of your materials (which we love to hear).
The appointments run between 30 and 60 minutes. While discussing your project, we’ll digitize the materials you bring in and send you home with the digital files for your collection.
What kinds of media can I bring to the Memory Lab for digitization?
VHS tapes, Audiocassettes, Optical media (CD-R/DVD-R), 3.5" floppy disks, Websites, 35mm negatives, Medium format negatives, 4″ x 5″ negatives, Photographs up to 11″ x 17″, Documents up to 11″ x 17″, and Slide photographs.
When can I book an appointment?
Archival consultations will be available at Pen and Brush, Thursday to Saturday, 12-6 from June 15-July 15.
How can I book an appointment?
By using our Calendly link. You’ll then be directed to an in-take form where you can tell us more about your collection so we can be prepared for your appointment!
TFI Teaches Zines
We are so excited to launch our TFI Teaches Zine Series alongside the Memory Lab! This initial series contains 3 zines: Personal Digital Archiving, Ethical Digitization Considerations, and Feminist Legacy Planning.
Stay tuned for teasers of the zine series all month!
Workshops
A memory lab wouldn’t be complete without an archival workshop series. Our workshops will be on Tuesdays, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm (with time for mingling before and after), with the exception of July 4th week. Keep an eye out for Eventbrite links and more information soon!
6/20: Personal Digital Archiving
This workshop will teach folks how to create their digital archive—from scanning to creating metadata to curating their selections; the TFI staff will cover it all!
6/27: Ethical Digitization Considerations
With personal digital archiving comes personal material. This workshop will discuss the ethics of digitizing and publishing personal material online. What kind of releases and considerations are needed if your materials include others?
7/11: Building a Feminist Legacy
How do you build your feminist legacy? This workshop will discuss what exactly a feminist legacy is and how to construct your archive around these principles. As The Feminist Institute builds our archiving practices around feminist legacy, we’re well-versed in the subject and want to share our strategies with our community!
